What is Comprehensive Cancer Control?

Comprehensive cancer control is defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as "an integrated and coordinated approach to reducing cancer incidence, morbidity and mortality through prevention, early detection, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliation".

Why is Comprehensive Cancer Control Important in Maryland?

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Maryland.  For the period of 2001 – 2005, Maryland had the 19th highest cancer death rate in the United States. The risk of developing cancer increases with age; therefore, as Marylanders live longer, the number of new cancer cases diagnosed each year in Maryland is expected to increase.

However, many cancers can be prevented or they can be successfully treated if the cancer is found when the tumor is small. Comprehensive Cancer Control integrates a range of cancer control activities to maximize the use of limited resources and achieve desired cancer prevention and control outcomes.

There are many entities working together, or "comprehensively", to coordinate the delivery of comprehensive cancer control.
