Baltimore City Colorectal Cancer Screening Demonstration Program
Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
In 2005, DHMH applied, on behalf of and in collaboration with, the Baltimore City Colorectal Cancer Collaborative and its partner organizations, to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for a grant to conduct a colorectal cancer screening demonstration project in Baltimore City. The objectives contained in the colorectal cancer chapter of the Maryland Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan were the basis of the application and, in September 2005, DHMH's grant for a multi-site, hospital-based colorectal cancer screening demonstration project in Baltimore City was awarded. Under the terms of the three year cooperative agreement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, five hospital sites would provide free colorectal cancer screening to Baltimore City residents. The hospital sites involved in the project are Harbor Hospital, Union Memorial Hospital, Johns Hopkins Hospital, St.Agnes Hospital, and Sinai Hospital. The program is coordinated by DHMH, with the Baltimore City Colorectal Cancer Collaborative serving as the Steering Committee for all activities under this cooperative agreement. As of January 2009, this program has screened over 600 individuals from Baltimore City.
