State of Maryland Web sites primarily describe the mission, scope, and activities of agencies of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene that are involved either directly or indirectly in cancer surveillance, prevention, programs, etc. Included are state programs dealing with cancer-related behavior and geographic information systems.

Center for Cancer Surveillance and Control

The DHMH Center for Cancer Surveillance and Control is responsible for assessing the cancer control problem in Maryland and developing cancer control priorities through collaboration with the State Council on Cancer Control and other state agencies. In addition the Center is playing a major role in the formation, implementation and coordination of the Cancer Prevention, Education, Screening and Treatment program funded by the Maryland Cigarette Restitution Fund Program.

Maryland Cancer Registry

The Maryland Cancer Registry within the DHMH Center for Cancer Surveillance and Control is a computerized data system that registers all cases of reportable human cancers (and benign central nervous system tumors) diagnosed or treated in Maryland.

Summarizes basic statistics about Maryland Medicaid recipients,  including tabulatable data about enrollment, eligibility, long-term care, diagnostic grouping, and number receiving services.

Maryland Health Care Commission, Medical Care Information

The Health Care Commission collects data on health care practitioners’ services (non-hospital health care) provided to Maryland residents who have private health insurance; also contains public use files for ambulatory surgery and hospice care.

Maryland Office of Health Promotion, Education, and Tobacco Use Prevention

The DHMH Center for Health Promotion, Education and Tobacco Use Prevention helps Maryland citizens, families, and communities make informed decisions to improve their health and quality of life. The Center strives to accomplish this goal by doing the following:

  • Educating the public to influence positive behavior changes regarding important health issues,
  • Organizing and supporting activities that prevent disease and injury, and
  • Advocating positive social and environmental changes through channels including coalition building, law and policy development, public and private partnerships and mass media.

Maryland State Geographic Information Committee (MSGIC)

The Maryland State Geographic Information Committee (MSGIC) acts to promote coordinated development and efficient use of resources amongst all entities involved in the collection and/or use of spatial data and GIS technologies in Maryland.

Maryland Vital Statistics Administration

The DHMH Vital Statistics Administration collects information from death certificates of all deaths in Maryland, including cancer deaths. The Maryland Vital Statistics Administration administers birth and death certification and develops reports summarizing mortality statistics for administrative and public health use.
