Childhood Obesity in Maryland

Welcome!

The purpose of this website is to serve as a resource for the Childhood Obesity Committee in developing recommendations for childhood obesity prevention.

Maintaining a healthy weight is important throughout the lifespan. Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition, as it has both immediate and long term consequences, which can dramatically impact the quality of life. As of 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found the childhood obesity rate to be 17.3% . It is estimated that given the current trends, one in every three children born in the year 2000 will develop type 2 diabetes, and childhood obesity rates will continue to increase.

Obesity can be prevented and can also be treated, usually from a balanced diet and exercise. Many childhood obesity preventive measures have been shown to have high success rates. These prevention tactics have been used in the home, in the community and in the school setting.
