Children's Environmental Health and Protection
Advisory Council

During the 2000 Legislative Session, the Maryland General Assembly passed HB313 establishing the 18 member Children's Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council (CEHPAC). CEHPAC's purpose is to identify environmental hazards that may affect children's health and to recommend solutions to those hazards. In passing this legislation, the 2000 Maryland General Assembly acknowledged the particular vulnerabilities of children to preventable harmful environmental exposures in their schools, homes, and communities.

The Council is structured for ongoing collaboration, and cooperation among multiple disciplines and agencies and the affected communities. The membership is mandated to include legislators; the Secretaries of the Departments of Health and Mental Hygiene, Environment, Agriculture, Education, Human Resources, and Housing; the Special Secretary of the Governor's Office for Children, Youth and Families; health providers; and environmental scientists. Administrative support for the Council is provided by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in collaboration with the Maryland Department of the Environment.

The legislative mandate requires CEHPAC to review existing and introduced regulations and to serve as a source of information and education for the public, professionals, State agencies, the General Assembly and the Governor regarding environmental hazards.
