Goal
The goal of the Child and Adolescent Health Program is to promote and protect the health of Maryland’s 1.5 million children and adolescents, ages 0-21, by assuring that comprehensive, quality preventive and primary services are available and accessible.
Background
The Program is responsible for developing policies and implementing primary prevention and early intervention strategies to improve the health of Maryland’s children. Leadership, consultation, training and technical assistance are provided in several program areas including school and adolescent health, care coordination and home visiting, environmental health and child fatality review. The Program collaborates with numerous DHMH programs and other State agencies in the development of policies and programs. This Program also oversees the child and adolescent health components of the Title V Maternal and Child Health Block Grant Program.
Current Activities
- Working with the Medical Assistance Program to increase enrollment in the Maryland Children’s Health Program (MCHP) and other Medical Assistance Programs.
- Funding, planning and support for initiatives that increase childhood lead screening and reduce lead poisoning, particularly in ‘at risk’ communities.
- Administration of the Maryland Asthma Control Program.
- Teen pregnancy prevention.
- Medical consultation and technical assistance to school health programs
- Administration of the Maryland Abstinence Education Program.
- Planning to prevent childhood obesity.
- Funding and support for Early Childhood programs including home visiting and care coordination and early childhood mental health.
- Technical assistance and support to State and local Child Fatality Review teams.
