FY 2008 Summary of Activities
Background
The Maternal and Child Health Block is the only federal program solely devoted to improving the health of all mothers and children, including those with special health care needs. The program is authorized under Title V of the 1935 Social Security Act. Grants are awarded to state health agencies to address community level needs, consistent with Title V regulations and guidelines. States are required to submit an annual application.
The Block Grant is administered by the Federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau . At the State level, Maryland’s program is jointly administered by the Center for Maternal and Child Health and the Office for Genetics and Children with Special Health Care Needs.
