image: fireman fighting blazeFires are the third leading cause of unintentional injury death in the U.S. In 2000, Maryland reported that fire related injury deaths accounted for two percent (58) of all injury related deaths.[1] Fire was also the 2nd leading cause of injury for children under age one in 1999 and 2000 in Maryland.[2] The number of people injured in Maryland in 1999 and 2000 as a result of fire was 511 and 507 respectively. [2] Baltimore City reported the highest number and rate of fire related injuries in Maryland.[2]

Facts About Fires

  • Smoke and toxic gases cause more fatalities from fires than burns.3
  • The primary cause of residential fires is cooking, but cigarette smoking is the leading cause of fire-related death.[3]
  • Alcohol use contributes to an estimated 40 percent of residential fire deaths.[3]
