Sexual Assault Reimbursement Unit

Program Overview

The Sexual Assault Reimbursement Unit, operating under the Code of Maryland Regulations 10.12.02, Rape and Sexual Offenses - Physician and Hospital Charges (select 12 Adult Health, subtitle 12.02 Rape and Sexual Offenses-Physician and Hospital Charges. Each regulation is a separate document), was created to provide reimbursement for the physical examination, collection of evidence, and emergency treatment of individuals for injuries resulting from alleged rape, sexual assault, or child sexual abuse. The Sexual Assault Reimbursement Unit aims to prevent individuals and their families from re-victimization by easing the reimbursement process associated with medical-forensic claims processing. The Sexual Assault Reimbursement Unit allows victims and their families to focus on the important task of healing.

Facts At A Glance

  • In 2005 (the last year for which statistics are available), 1,266 forcible rapes were reported in Maryland.  Rape accounted for three percent of the violent crime and 0.5 percent of the crime index.  In 2005, there were 22.6 forcible rapes per 100,000 population – Crime in the United States, 2005.
  • In FY06, the Sexual Assault Reimbursement Unit (SARU) processed 2,640 rape, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse claims.

  • In FY06, the total number of hospital claims was 1,203 (46 percent).  The total number of professional claims was 1,437 (54 percent).
  • In FY06, the total budget was approximately $1,164,044.  Hospital claims totaled $797,068 (68 percent) and professional claims totaled $366,976 (32 percent).
