Public Health Assessment
Data and related analytic resources are critical for effective policy making. They are needed to develop new programs, guide program implementation, and evaluate the impact of programs and policies. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is an ongoing surveillance program designed to collect data, primarily by telephone, on the behaviors and conditions that place Marylanders at risk for chronic diseases, injuries, and preventable infectious diseases. The data collected are used to characterize health behaviors, ascertain the prevalence of risk factors, and target demographic groups with increased needs. Knowing the type and frequency of health issues and risky behaviors enables public health professionals to devise and implement programs geared toward the prevention of injuries and chronic diseases. The BRFSS collects information mainly on residents 18 years of age and older, and the typical sample size is approximately 8,900 households. BRFSS data for 1995 through 2008 can be found at www.marylandbrfss.org. Data can be analyzed by year and demographics, as well as by specific jurisdictions.
